Who wants this Coffee?

I am sure most of you must have heard about Cat Coffee. They say it is one of the world's most expensive & "coveted" kinds of coffee. And do you know the reason? It comes from an unusual source - the droppings of a nocturnal, cat-like animal called the palm civet. The beans pass through the civet whole after fermenting in the stomach and that's what gives the coffee its "unique" taste and aroma.

And you know what, it is available in Dubai now, for only Dirhams 269 per cup.

Where is this world heading to? Everything seems to revolve around making money, in whatever way even if that means fooling people. And the sad thing is that there is no shortage of people who are willing to be fooled in the name of sweet sounding words like premium, luxury, high class, etc.

Pheeww~ Glad that the fetish I had with coffee is long gone or I would have been one of the ignorant and gulp it down not knowing it's poop. Heaps of thanks for the information sharing.

I reckon that the world is getting peculiar by the minute and all people can ever think about is just how to get big bucks, even if it means duping others.

Mars said...

eee...people actually pay money for that? most people tasting bad but inexpensive coffee say that it tastes like rat droppings, yet people spend loads of cash for actual cat poo??? errrrr....

Dubai Guy said...

Sketched Soul: Nothing wrong with ordinary coffee, its I guess the special coffee you should be afraid of :-D

Hajar: I believe you are a first time visitor, so welcome to my blog :-)

Very true, world is becoming a strange place to live in, thanks to the practice of blindly promoting "capitalism"

Mars: Well, I have noticed something. The more money you have, the smaller your brain. Has anyone else also noticed that? :-)

A Global Citizen said...

Sad! While half of the world population is living with under $1 per day, someone is actually ready to pay 269 Dirhams for a cup of coffee.

الله المستعان

ughhhhhhhhh! Never heard of it!

Ya'eeeeny 'annaaaaaaaaaaas!

A Global Citizen: Well, this is what happens when there is unequal distribution of wealth. When the rich get richer while the poor get squeezed further. And on top of that, most of the rich neglect their duty of paying Zakat.

Sara: Well, now you know it, courtesy of DG Diary :-D

Salaam Alaikum.

Yuck!~

It is sad how people easily get fooled with words like those. Half the people just wanna show off and producers are cashing in on these show offs.

But Dh269 for that disgusting drink... Alhamdulillah I have a brain!

*~Ange~* said...

salam.. why the *&%^ would you wanna drink cat crap anyway?

Dubai Guy said...

Umm Abdullah: Wa alaikom assalam. True, fully agree with what you said. Many of the branded item producers, have we ever wondered from where do they source their products? And how much do the real people who make the stuff earn? But no, most of us prefer to buy expensive stuff just to show off & satisfy our fake egos, as you said :-)

*~Ange~*: Maybe because they don't know where to spend their money :-)

well i wouldnt be so surprised from where it came from but more of the price.

You got me interested enough to research this animal, which is more like a possum, and its a vegetarian, which doesnt make it sound so icky anymore.
Plus if you think about how vegis get nutrients from cow manure and about jello coming from animal joint fluid...its not such a far fetched idea that people would eventually turn to consuming something like this.

People are always on the look out for making money more right?

Thanks for sharing!

Dubai Guy said...

Emma: Yes people are always on the look out for making money more but then greed is something undesirable. When greed blinds people, you only see the rich getting richer while the common people get pushed further into a never ending debt-trap & misery. Maybe I am wrong, but at least this is what I have observed in people around me.

As for the creature being a vegetarian, well still this is not my cup of coffee :-D

Hey new here i saw your icon on my follwoers :)
Wow what can I say that hasn't been said except my first thought was "Is this even Halal to drink?!!" Doesn't it fall under the CATagory of najasa? Disgusting, I'm pretty sure the makers wouldn't want it's origin unmasked or poeple might go from paying $50 to $0.50.. but there are the few idiots still.....

Dubai Guy said...

American Muslima Writer: You have raised a point most of us here missed. You are right, the question is whether it is halal or not. Btw, you call them idiots? You know what they think? That we the ordinary people are idiots & they are the geniuses :-D

A London department store has started selling coffee for $100 a shot.

Civet cats: The coffee beans are collected from the animal's faeces.

If the price sounds unappealing, shoppers also have to overcome the unusual method of cultivation, which sees the coffee beans harvested from the feces of an Indonesian jungle cat.

Even so, the Peter Jones store says the luxury blend -- called Caffé Raro -- is one of the world's rarest and most premium coffees.

Made by the Italian company De Longhi, Caffé Raro combines Jamaican Blue Mountain and Kupi Luwak, two extremely rare coffees.

The beans of Kupi Luwak are harvested after being ingested by civet cats, and only about 260 kilos (about 573 pounds) of the coffee is produced each year.
Don't Miss

* Is cat dung coffee worth $100 a shot?

"The cats select the best beans to chew. It's rather like a natural filtering process," said Carie Barkhuzen, a spokeswoman for the upmarket store in London's upmarket Sloane Square.

The coffee, which went on sale Thursday, is available at $100 for a shot at the Peter Jones Espresso Bar, or shoppers can buy 100g (3.5-ounce) packs of the coffee beans to take away for the same price.

It also shows how marketers use sweet words to fool people. Don't you agree with that?

LOL, Hahahahaha poopoo - coffee, limited offer (due to the fact that our cat can't poop that often).

That is just gross... I don't drink coffee which saves me a lot of space of mind.

Plus, I wouldn't buy ANYTHING that costs 269DHS that's gonna end up in my toilet in a few hours time :D

Sorry I sound like a stalker commenting on each post, but I gotta give feedback on things I like.

I've heard of the "Kopi Luwak". The same concept and it seems a different animal. Found in Indonesia. You can google it to know more.

The question whether it is halal or haram did cross my mind. Still, even though if it was halal, I don't think i will drink it ! Just the thought of it made my stomach turn !

Dubai Guy said...

MYTH.GRAPHY: So you don't drink coffee too. welcome to the club :-D

Halawa: Nice logic, why spend 269 for something which will go down the drain in few seconds. By the way, where has the "stalker" disappeared? :-)

Jamila: No comments :-)

Single and Fabulous: I guess this drink is Kopi Luwak, its source is civet cat found in Indonesia. As for not drinking it, I guess most sensible person would do the same :-)
