What is Happiness?

Despite the obvious failings in development, Mrs Kaabi, who has lived in the same home for 30 years, is happy. She said with a smile: “I have all my children here with me. How many city mothers can say that?

This is the last paragraph of an article which appeared in the first issue of The National, the newest English newspaper in the UAE. I must say that I am really impressed, I hope they will maintain the same standards in the coming months & years.

I am really speechless. I see
people who are blessed with all the wordly comforts & yet they are not satisfied. And here we have a "poor" (as per our standards) lady from Fujairah who is happy & content with her life. This story reminds me of a hadith I had quoted earlier in one of my posts.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (pbuh) said, "Riches does not mean, having a great amount of property, but riches is self contentment."

I looked for the hadithi wanted to mention here but couldn't find it.. it says that the propht salla Allahu alaihy wassalam said (something like): one who has a cieling to shelter him, food for that day & healthy, has nothing more to want..

I'm happy with all I have DG.. WAllahi alatheem you won't imagine how gratefull I am & how I'm always in this overwhelming state! Ever since I was a li'l girl I've had this feeling that "it's too much".. I have a lotta things.. I love a lotta ppl.. It's too much.. A lotta ppl love me.. Im cared for.. u know that feeling? Allah Knows how small I feel & that all i have is A LOT for me.. small li'l me..

I wish for death, cuz I know that this dunya is damned with all it has except for the rememberance of Allah in all its forms.. Getting married is a way.. Kissing your mom's hand is a form.. Smiling whn u really can't is a form..

Now, every night, when I go to bed, I think to myself: can this e my last night? I know I'll never be ready to meet God with the sins I've commited.. But, I don't want more of this dunya, I want less..

Its doesn't mean that the contentment in my heart is less than the one in that lasy's heart.. Maybe mine is more..

It's just that, since it's all "keteer 'alaya" & since whatever I do won't be enough, I wish for the pretty beautiful peacful end of it & start of the eternal happy life..

It's all written anyway.. but that's how I feel.. People think it's cuz im not happy.. WALLAHI I AM HAPPY PEOPLE.. But my heart longs for a higher place.. My soul, herat, mind & body..

sara wants to go up there.. that's all :)

but sara is happy.. And so does she wish for everyone.. real happiness.. Amen :)

Sara: OMG, how do you manage to write so much? I have to push myself really hard to write a small post & that too after many days. I believe you should seriously think about becoming a professional writer :-)

Coming back to your comment, yes I agree with you. This world is a transit point & we all are passengers who stay here for a short time & then we have to move towards our final destination. May Allah help all of us become happy residents at the final destination.

Hemlock: Well if you love the town, you better move NOW because I think in few years time the place will lose much of its charm for the sake of "development"

I too loved this human interest story in the first edition of The National.

The woman’s impressions about life in Fujairah are hers and probably many people feel like her—somewhat isolated and behind the times in the way of health services.

This may also be the way that many outside of Fujairah think about this dusty village but it is changing and changing very rapidly. It is also becoming strongly connected.

Driving to Dubai early one morning this week I was amazed at the number of drivers who were commuting to Dubai or Sharjah. Increasingly, there are many who work in Dubai and are choosing to live in Fujairah. This eastern city will be more closely connected by a fast road from 2009 cutting the time significantly that it will take to get from Dubai to Fujairah. This will lessen the sense of isolation, lead to the even more rapid growth of Fujairah and unfortunately raise the cost of villas and apartments.

I hope Fujairah in the process doesn’t lose the authentic Emirati culture for which it is known and loved.

Many thanks for your wonderful site and insightful comments.

I've just left the comfort of a very physically beautiful life to return to my family and the relative lack of *material* things. How true the words of the Prophet.

Geoff Pound: Thanks you doctor for your words of encouragement. Glad to see you here on my blog :-)

Unfortunately, only money has become the authentic culture & I am afraid just like you that Fujairah will pay a heavy price for development as far as social front is considered. I just hope that I am proved wrong.

Al: Wa alaikom assalam wa rahmatAllah :-)

Welcome to my blog & I am glad to know that you liked it. Hope you will become a regular visitor.

Rufus: First of all, welcome to my blog fellow "Gardener" :-)

So how has been your experience so far, living a material less life?

لؤلؤة: Welcome to my blog & thanks for the compliment. Glad to know yet another person who agrees with my point of view. Welcome to the tribe :-)

Hi Tim, first fo all welcome here & thanks for the compliment :-)

Your mother is very much right, everything is related to the heart. Heart is clean & pure, everything appears alright even if people see it otherwise. Opposite is true for a sick heart. Or am I wrong? :-)

You are right. It's why I have recently started bying woodland across the UK and doing what I like rather than purely persuing money...you got to do what makes you happy...not follow other people's ideas of it...
